CLINTON - The Lander softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader at NCAA Division I Presbyterian College Wednesday afternoon, 5-0 and 11-2, at the PC Softball Complex. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
PC improves to 2-0 on the season, while Lander evens its record at 4-4.
In the first game, Leslie Hensley (1-0) earned the win for PC as she struck out seven and allowed just two hits in six innings.
Lander's Hayley Leissner (2-2) suffered the loss. Leissner struck out eight, walked four and allowed four earned runs on five hits in six innings pitched.
Presbyterian took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Tera Powell scored on a wild pitch and Amanda Miller scored on Hensley's sacrifice fly. PC stretched the lead to 3-0 in the third when Katie Anderson's RBI single scored Taylor Staten. The Blue Hose scored the final two runs in the fourth inning when Becca Caldwell scored on Lindsey Trombley's sacrifice fly and Krysten Handy crossed the plate on a Lander error.
Lander's Natalie Smith and Marilyn Newman had one hit each.
In the second game, Mary Gordon (1-0) earned the win, striking out three, walking two and allowing just two hits in four innings pitched. The game was called due to the eight-run rule.
Lander's Shelbey Spencer (2-1) took the loss as she struck out two, walked two and allowed seven earned runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
After scoring one run in the first inning, PC scored six in the second inning and four more in the fourth. Lander scored two runs in the fifth on Brittney Sheriff's RBI double and Natalie Smith's groundout.
Sheriff batted 2-for-2 with one double, one run scored and one RBI to lead Lander's hitters.
For PC, Mary Gordon went 2-for-2 with one home runone run scored and three RBI; Rachel Hopper went 1-for-2 with one homer, and two RBI, while Anderson (3-for-3, three RBI), Hensley (1-for-2), Brittany Howell (1-for-1, one RBI) and Krysten Handy (2-for-3, two RBI) all doubled.
Lander will travel to Newberry on Saturday for a 2 o'clock non-conference doubleheader.
