GREENWOOD - The fourth-ranked Lander women's basketball team placed three players in double figures Sunday afternoon to claim a 68-52 non-conference victory over visiting Carson-Newman in the final game of the Lady Bearcats D-2 Tipoff Classic in Horne Arena.
Lander moves to 2-0 on the season, while Carson-Newman drops to 0-2.
Shannon McKever, who made 10-of-16 field goals, paved the way for the Bearcats with 22 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Ciara Lyons added 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Jasmine Judge had 11 points and four steals, and Brittni Johnson seven assists and four steals.
Carson-Newman was paced by Shannon Depew and Dominique Jackson, who scored 12 and 10 points respectively. Mandy Mendenhall grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Depew had seven and Jackson and Katlin Moore six each.
After three ties and three lead changes to open the game, Lander finally took the lead for good on a McKever jumper at 12:10 which gave Lander a 13-12 lead. The Lady Bearcats used a 9-0 run to take a 20-12 advantage with 11:25 remaining on a McKever three-point play.
Lander stretched the margin to 13 points at 29-16 on a Lyons jumper at 6:07 and ended the half with a 40-26 lead.
The Lady Bearcats opened the second half with a 9-4 run and took its biggest lead of the game at 19 points (49-30) on a Judge three-point shot with 15:59 left in the game.
Carson-Newman scored nine unanwered points to trim the lead to 49-39 with 13:18 left, but the Bearcats gradually extended their lead back out to 18 points -- 66-48 -- with 2:13 left on another Judge three.
Carson-Newman connected on 21-of-60 field goals for 35 percent, including 1-of-8 threes for 12.5 percent. The Lady Eagles made 9-of-10 free throws for 90 percent.
Lander was 26-of-75 from the field for 34.7 percent, 5-of-21 from the three-point line for 23.8 percent and 11-of-17 from the foul line for 64.7 percent.
Lander outrebounded the Lady Eagles, 48-43, and forced Carson-Newman into 21 turnovers.
