MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Lander men's soccer team claimed its seventh straight game Wednesday afternoon when the Bearcats scored the game-winner with a little more than three minutes remaining in a 1-0 non-conference victory over Pfeiffer University.
Lander, the No. 5-ranked team in the Southeast Region, improves to 11-5 overall, while Pfeiffer drops to 4-7-3.
The Bearcats' Zach Acree scored the game's lone goal when he took a quick pass down the middle from Craig Hughes and fired the ball into the right corner with just 3:06 left in the game.
Lander outshot Pfeiffer, 18-5, and led in corner kicks, 8-4.
Pfeiffer goalkeeper Alex Moreno registered three saves, while Lander's Matt Atkinson, last week's PBC Goalkeeper of the Week, had one.
Lander next travels to Clayton State on Saturday for the regular-season finale. If Lander defeats or ties the Lakers, it will win the PBC regular season title and the No. 1 seed in next week's conference tournament. A loss to Clayton State gives Lander a share of the PBC title, but the Lakers would be the tournament's top seed.
