Johnson leads No. 11 Lander past Columbus State, 76-69

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Brittni Johnson scored 17 points and two other Lady Bearcats scored in double figures Thursday night to lead the No. 11 Lander women's basketball team to a 76-69 Peach Belt Conference victory over Columbus State at the Lumpkin Center.

In winning its 10th straight game, Lander improves to 17-1 overall and 10-0 in the PBC, while Columbus State slips to 10-8, 4-4.

Johnson connected on 7-of-13 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws, while grabbing four rebounds and getting four steals to lead Lander. Tasheba Butler added a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, while Ciara Lyons recorded 13 points and three assists.

CSU was led by Phebe Smith's 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Monique Jefferson netted 12 points and Renee Jackson 10.

After a very close first 10 minutes, Lander started pulling away from CSU at 9:59 when Kaylyn Small's layup gave Lander a 21-20 lead. The Lady Bearcats stretched the margin to 34-27 on Keondra Barnes' jumper at 3:42, then Kami Phillips' layup at 1:01 gave the Lady Bearcats their first 10-point lead at 40-30.

The Bearcats went up 44-32 with 19:11 left in the game on Shannon McKever's layup and never let Columbus State get closer than six points the remainder of the game.

After Kelsie Weynand's three-pointer cut Lander's lead to 57-51 with 9:41 left, the Lady Bearcats went on a 7-1 run to push their lead to 64-52 with 7:30 remaining.

Lander, which led, 40-30 at halftime, connected on 28-of-67 shots for 41.8 percent, including 5-of-9 three pointers for 55.6 percent. The Lady Bearcats also made 15-of-23 free throws for 65.2 percent.

CSU was 26-of-60 for 43.3 percent, including 4-of-15 from the three-point line for 26.7 percent. The Lady Cougars were also 13-of-23 from the foul line for 56.5 percent.
