SAVANNAH, Ga. - The top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University men's tennis team downed No. 20 Lander, 5-0, Friday afternoon at the AASU Tennis Complex and earned the right to advance to Saturday's NCAA Division II Southeast Region championship game.
Lander ends the season with a 9-9 overall record, while Armstrong Atlantic improves to 25-1.
The Pirates kicked off the win by sweeping the three doubles matches. The 10th-ranked team of Rafael Array/Tim Johannsen defeated Lander's T.C. Valle/Sheharyar Wali, 8-4, at No. 1; while No. 2 Eudaldo Bonet/Akos Torok downed Damien Cordesse/Juan Manrique, 8-1; and No. 3 Mikk Irdoja/Paul Fitzgerald beat Gary Bertoldo/Levan Clark, 8-0.
AASU took the first two singles matches to claim the victory when Array downed Manrique, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4, and Johannsen beat Carlos Marques, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5.
AASU will meet USC Aiken at 2 p.m. Saturday for the regional title and the right to advance to the national championship tournament.
