Lady Bearcats remain unbeaten as they roll past Barton

SALISBURY, N.C. - Shannon McKever exploded for 21 points and 17 rebounds Saturday afternoon to help the Lander women's basketball team remain undefeated as they downed Barton College, 93-78, in a non-conference game on the final day of the Comfort Suites Classic hosted by Catawba College.

Lander improves to 3-0 overall, while Barton drops to 1-1.

McKever connected on 9-of-13 shots from the field and 3-of-5 free throws and accomplished her double-double in just 28 minutes of play. Ciara Lyons added 17 points and seven assists, while Mukia Myrick totaled 13 points and eight rebounds and Kaylyn Small had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Barton was paced by Jamila Johnson and Esty Flores, who scored 19 and 17 points respectively. Destiny Hamlin added 11 points while Jannetta Robinson grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Lander, which led 47-23 at halftime, connected on 31-of-71 field goals for 43.7 percent, including 5-of-17 three pointers, and 26-of-33 free throws for 78.8 percent.

Barton made 27-of-76 floor shots for 35.5 percent, including 4-of-17 threes, and connected on 20-of-27 foul shots for 74.1 percent.

Lander outrebounded Barton, 54-43.

After being tied at 5-5, the Lady Bearcats went on a 15-2 run to take a 20-7 advantage with 13:19 remaining in the first half on a Brittni Johnson layup. Myrick's three-pointer at 5:36 gave Lander a 22-point lead at 37-15 and a Lyons' three with four seconds left in the half gave Lander a 47-23 advantage.

The Lady Bearcats posted their biggest lead of the game at 31 points on Lyons' layup which gave Lander a 59-28 lead with 17:10 left.

Barton cut the lead to 73-59 on a Johnson field goal at 5:35.

The Bearcats will try to stretch their unbeaten win streak to 4-0 on Tuesday when they host Queens University of Charlotte at 5:30 p.m. in their home opener.
