Robbins leads Lady Bearcats past UNC Pembroke, 67-60

GREENWOOD – Lander freshman guard Nardia Robbins scored 18 points including the go-ahead basket as the Lady Bearcats scored the game's final 10 points, defeating UNC Pembroke 67-60 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Monday night at Horne Arena.

Lander improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Peach Belt. The Braves fell to 4-6, 0-3.

Robbins hit six of nine shots from the floor, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, and scored the go-ahead basket with one minute left to pace the Lady Bearcats. Mukia Myrick added 14 points, Jasmine Judge scored 11 points, Shannon McKever had 13 rebounds including nine defensive boards, and Robbins added five assists.

Lander shot 50 percent from the floor, made nine of 20 shots from 3-point range, and hit 12 of 14 free throws including six straight in the final 33.7 seconds.

Lavontay Johnson led Pembroke with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Marquena Delk added nine points.

The second half was a battle with several ties and lead changes before UNC Pembroke scored six unanswered points to take a 58-55 advantage with just under four minutes left. Lander's Andrea Butler made a lay-up to pull the hosts within 58-57 at the 2:22 mark. But Johnson hit two free throws to put the Braves up 60-57 with 1:50 to go. It would be Pembroke's last points.

McKever scored on a put-back at the 1:26 mark to pull Lander within one. After a Pembroke turnover, Robbins scored on a jumper in the lane off McKever's assist to give the Lady Bearcats the lead for good at 61-60 with one minute to go.

Myrick hit two free throws with 33.7 seconds left to push Lander's lead to three. After Delk missed a shot for the Braves, McKever grabbed the defensive rebound. Judge and Robbins each hit a pair of free throws in the final 18 seconds to put the game away.

UNC Pembroke raced to an 8-2 lead behind 3-pointers by Kristen Hobbs and Johnson, and the advantage grew to 17-9 on JaToya Kemp's three-point play with 10 minutes left in the first half. After Robbins hit a 3-pointer to pull Lander within 17-12, Ari Hendrix hit a 3-pointer and Johnson scored to give the Braves their biggest lead of the game at 22-12 at the 7:30 mark.

Butler came off the Lady Bearcats bench to score consecutive baskets, Judge hit a 3-pointer, and Myrick converted a three-point play, pulling Lander within 25-23 with 2:39 left.

Judge hit another 3-pointer to close the deficit to one, 27-26, with 1:48 to go and Robbins hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Bearcats their first lead of the opening half at 29-28 with 38 seconds left. But Pembroke's Ashley Morales drained a 3-pointer to give the visitors a 31-29 halftime lead.

Lander came out firing 3-pointers again early in the second half, getting two from Robbins and one from Myrick to build a 39-35 lead. Delk's basket ended a 6-0 run that put Pembroke back on top, 41-39, and the teams traded baskets for several minutes. The game was tied at 41, 43, 48, 50 and 52.

Judge's 3-pointer from the left side gave the Lady Bearcats a 55-52 lead with 6:36 left, but Pembroke responded with six unanswered points with Delk's lay-up giving the visitors a 58-55 lead at the 3:55 mark.

For the game, Lander made 23 of 56 shots from the floor (50 percent), 12 of 14 free throws (86 percent), and nine of 20 from behind the arc (45 percent). The Braves made 23 of 67 shots (34 percent), nine of 13 free throws (69 percent), and five of 18 from 3-point range (28 percent). Each team had 21 turnovers and Pembroke had a 45-35 rebounding advantage.
