Lady Bearcats triumph over Georgia Southwestern, 87-70

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Lander women's basketball team placed five players in double figures Saturday afternoon as the Lady Bearcats defeated homestanding Georgia Southwestern, 87-70, in a Peach Belt Conference game.

Lander improves to 11-7 overall and 6-5 in the PBC, while Georgia Southwestern falls to 6-13, 1-11.

For the Lady Bearcats, Shannon McKever led the way with 17 points and six rebounds, while Ciara Lyons added 16 points and five assists, TaSheba Butler 13 points and nine rebounds, Jasmine Judge 12 points, and Nardia Robbins 11 points and five assists.

GSW's Jamilah Sharp posted a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Whitley Wiltz had 14 points and Nadirah Gardner 11 points.

Lander, which led 51-39 at halftime, made 34-of-72 field goals for 47.2 percent, including 6-of-14 three pointers (42.2 percent), and 13-of-24 free throws (54.2 percent).

The Lady Hurricanes were 29-of-78 from the floor for 37.2 percent, including 5-of-19 from the three (26.3 percent) and 13-of-24 from the foul line (63.6 percent).

GSW out-rebounded Lander, 53-43.

After a tight first 12 minutes, Lander began pulling away when the Lady Bearcats outscored GSW, 25-14, in the final eight minutes of the half.

Lander built its lead up to 22 points when a McKever jumper made it 70-48 with 11:18 left in the game. GSW cut the lead to 15 points on several occasions in the second half, but could never make a run at the visiting Lady Bearcats.

Lander will host North Georgia College at 5:30 p.m., Feb. 2, in a PBC game at Horne Arena.
