GREENWOOD – The Lander women's basketball team set school and Peach Belt Conference records for points in a game and margin of victory, placing seven players in double figures in a 124-37 non-conference win over Allen University Wednesday night at Finis Horne Arena.
Nardia Robbins hit a free throw with 38 seconds left, pushing the Lady Bearcats to 122 points. That surpassed the school's previous record total set on Jan. 9, 2008, in a 121-65 victory at Allen.
Lander scored one more basket in the final seconds, giving the team its 87-point margin of victory. The previous record was 73 points set Dec. 1, 2007, in a 113-40 win over Peach Belt rival Georgia Southwestern.
The Lady Bearcats improved to 2-1 overall on the season while Allen fell to 1-5.
Andrea Butler led Lander with 18 points, Robbins and Ciara Lyons scored 15 points apiece, Jasmine Judge scored 14, Brittni Johnson added 13, TaSheba Butler 12, and Brianna Webb 11. Andrea Butler was the game's top rebounder with eight while Robbins and Kaylyn Small had five steals apiece. Robbins also had a game-high six steals. All 12 Lander players scored.
Brittney Jones led the Yellow Jackets with 10 points while Faith Simmons led the visitors with six rebounds.
After Allen scored the first basket of the game, the Lady Bearcats went on a 16-2 run with Judge hitting a pair of 3-pointers and Johnson and Andrea Butler scoring two baskets apiece for a 16-4 lead.
The Yellow Jackets scored six unanswered points to pull within 16-10. But Lander blew the game open with a 39-4 run highlighted by a series of fast-break baskets and Allen turnovers. The Lady Bearcats led 55-14 with four minutes left in the first half.
Lander's lead grew to 66-21 at halftime as 10 different Lady Bearcats scored points, with Johnson getting 13 points, Judge 12, and Lyons 10. Lander made 27 of 57 shots (56 percent) from the floor in the first half. The Lady Bearcats forced 20 turnovers in the first half while out-rebounding Allen 27-14.
Lander scored the first 16 points of the second half and led 82-21 with 14 minutes left in the game. The Lady Bearcats surpassed the 90-point mark on TaSheba Butler's basket that made it 91-27 with 9:45 to go.
Lander's lead grew to 70 points, 99-29, with 7:45 to go and the team passed the 100-point mark on Webb's jumper at the 7:18 mark. The margin grew to 80 points, 113-33, with 3:30 to go.
For the game, the Lady Bearcats made 48 of 86 shots from the floor (56 percent), 21 of 33 free throws (64 percent), and seven of 17 from 3-point range (41 percent). Allen hit 14 of 47 shots (30 percent), nine of 21 free throws (43 percent), and missed both its 3-point attempts. Lander had a 52-30 edge on the boards and forced 42 turnovers while committing only nine.
