JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Lander women's basketball team placed four players in double figures Saturday, but it was not enough as the Lady Bearcats dropped their season-opener at Carson-Newman, 92-83, in the Eagle Classic at Holt Fieldhouse.
Carson-Newman is 1-0 overall, while Lander is 0-1.
Sophomore center Shannon McKever led the Bearcats with a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds. McKever connected on 9-of-13 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws. Mukia Myrick netted 13 points for Lander, while TaSheba Butler and Jasmine Judge had 12 each.
Ashley Kyle led the Lady Eagles with 20 points and nine assists, while Lindsey Eggleston added 18 points and 10 rebounds, Mandy Mendenhall 12 points and Ashley Tipton 11 points and six rebounds.
Lander, which trailed 55-44 at halftime, connected on 31-of-65 field goals for 47.7 percent, including 6-of-18 three pointers for 33.3 percent, and 15-of-21 free throws for 71.4 percent.
Carson-Newman was 36-of-61 from the floor for 59 percent, 4-of-12 from the three-point line for 33.3 percent, and 16-of-22 from the foul line for 72.7 percent.
The Lady Eagles outrebounded Lander, 33-28.
Lander will face Brevard College at 2 p.m. Sunday.
