COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Lander women's basketball team set a Peach Belt Conference and school record for points in a game while TaSheba Butler almost broke the individual single-game scoring record as the Lady Bearcats cruised to a 121-65 non-conference victory at Allen University Wednesday night.
Butler led five double-figure scorers with 40 points as Lander improved to 9-4 on the season. She was one point shy of tying Lorain Truesdale's school record 41 points set in 1993.
Shiree Halley led Allen (0-11) with 13 points while Tiffani Briscoe added 12 points.
The previous PBC and school record for points in a game occurred Nov. 24, 2007, when the Lady Bearcats beat Southern Wesleyan 116-79. Wednesday marked the fifth time that Lander topped 100 points in a game this season.
Butler made 15 of 25 shots from the floor and nine of 10 free throws. The freshman guard scored 24 points in the first half and finished the game with five assists, four steals and two blocked shots.
There were plenty others who had big games for Lander. Tiara Good posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists. LaShonda Chiles had 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Kiana Smith added 13 points, seven assists and five steals. Shannon McKever chipped in with 12 points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots.
The Lady Bearcats shot a sizzling 60 percent from the floor in the first half (27-for-45) in building a 65-30 halftime lead.
For the game, Lander made 46 of 90 shots from the floor (51 percent), nine of 28 from 3-point range (32 percent), and 20 of 29 free throws (69 percent). Allen made 22 of 66 shots (33 percent), three of nine from behind the arc (33 percent), and 18 of 31 free throws (58 percent). Allen had a 52-50 edge on the boards.
