GREENWOOD – Roberta Phillips hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in overtime to give Clayton State a wild 78-75 Peach Belt Conference victory Saturday afternoon over the Lander Lady Bearcats, who rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit. It was Lander's first Peach Belt loss of the season.
Clayton State improved to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the Peach Belt while Lander fell to 11-5, 5-1.
Phillips led the Lady Lakers with 21 points, Shantel Ragin scored 19 points and Kimberly Larry added 12 points. Ragin also had five steals, Dominique Jennings had a game-high five assists and Shanrika Hardeman led Clayton State with nine rebounds.
LaShonda Chiles paced five Lander double-figure scorers with 16 points, Tiara Good, Shannon McKever and Stephanie Ponds added 12 points apiece, and TaSheba Butler scored 10. Good, McKever and Ponds shared game-high honors with 10 rebounds apiece.
The score was tied at 75 with less than 30 seconds left when Clayton gained possession on a turnover. Phillips hit the 3-pointer from the right wing to put the Lakers on top. Chiles took the ball up the floor and attempted a game-tying 3-pointer from the top of the key. But the ball bounced off the rim at the buzzer.
Clayton State raced to a 34-16 halftime lead as Lander committed 19 turnovers and made only five of 24 shots (21 percent) from the floor. Ragin had 11 points in the first half while Marie St. Fort and Phillips had four steals apiece. The Lady Bearcats had more turnovers than points in the first half.
But Lander started the second half with a 22-8 run to pull within 42-38 on Butler's 3-pointer with 11:38 left in regulation. Arlanderia Whitlock hit a 3-pointer and Larry hit a jumper to extend Clayton's lead to 47-38 with 10:42 to go.
The Lakers still led by nine, 57-48, with 7:14 to go on a Ragin jumper. But Lander scored seven unanswered points on a jumper by Kiana Smith, two free throws by Good, and a 3-pointer by Good that cut it to 57-55 at the 4:32 mark.
Whitlock's free throw made it 58-55 with 3:01 to go. But Smith converted a three-point play with 2:51 left to tie the game at 58. Ponds gave Lander a 60-58 lead with a basket with 1:42 left. After a free throw by Clayton's Lisa Jackson, Ponds hit two free throws to push the Lady Bearcat lead to 62-59 with 1:16 to go. Then Clayton's Jennings hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 59 seconds left.
Phillips scored with 23 seconds left to give the Lakers a 64-62 lead. Chiles scored with 10 seconds left to tie the game at 64. Larry missed a shot in the final seconds to send the game into overtime.
The game stayed tight throughout overtime, with ties at 66, 68, 73 and 75 before Phillips hit the game-winner. Ponds had converted a three-point play with 1:18 left to give the Lady Bearcats a 75-73 lead. Ragin scored with 1:10 to go to tie the game, setting the stage for the winning shot.
For the game, Lander made 25 of 59 shots from the floor (42 percent), five of 14 from behind the 3-point line (36 percent), and 20 of 26 free throws (77 percent). The Lady Bearcats hit 16 of 27 shots (59 percent) in the second half.
Clayton made 34 of 94 shots from the floor (36 percent), eight of 26 from behind the arc (31 percent), and two of seven free throws (29 percent). The Lakers committed only 10 turnovers to Lander's 30. The Lady Bearcats out-rebounded Clayton 56-46.
