AUGUSTA, Ga.----The No. 3-seeded USC Upstate men's tennis team upset No. 2 seed Lander, 5-2, Saturday night in the semifinal round of the Peach Belt Conference tournament held at the Newman Tennis Center.
USC Upstate won two of the three doubles matches then claimed singles matches at the Nos. 2, 3, and 4 positions.
In doubles, No. 1 Stefan Dumitrescu/Renzo Airaldi (Upstate) def. Andre Ivarsson/Joakim Karlsson, 8-6; No. 2 Sandy Franz/Javier Tori (Upstate) def. Nicolas Legros/Guilherme Fonseca, 9-8; and No. 3 Henrik Willers/T.C. Valle (LU) def. Sebastian Gonzalez/Leandro Osorio, 8-5.
In singles, No. 2 Franz (Upstate) def. Legros, 7-5, 6-4; No. 3 Tori (Upstate) def. Fonseca, 6-0, 6-2; No. 4 Gonzalez (Upstate) def. Ivarsson, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2; and No. 5 Willers (LU) def. Arnolda Lovera, 6-4, 6-4.
USC Upstate improves to 20-3 overall, while Lander drops to 16-6. Lander will face No. 4 USC Aiken at 8 a.m., Sunday in the consolation match.
