Lander Falls to Top-Seeded Columbus State in PBC Tournament Semifinals

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Fourth-seeded Lander University saw its Peach Belt Conference tournament run end Saturday with a 4-0 loss to top-seeded Columbus State University in the semifinal round.

Columbus State (18-2) secured the doubles point early and carried that momentum into singles play, clinching the match before several tightly contested courts could finish.

The Cougars took control from the outset by winning two of the three doubles courts. At No. 1, Elias Peter and Andrea Sandrone defeated Harry Pugh and Brendan Jayaprakash, 6-2, to put the hosts on the board. Columbus State followed with a decisive 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles behind Thomas Cardona and Samer Al Tori over Ismail ElShafei and Benjamin Bates to clinch the doubles point.

The No. 3 doubles match, featuring Anton Krondell and Max Barriere for Lander, was left unfinished with Columbus State holding a 4-3 edge.

Columbus State quickly extended its lead in singles. Beginning with a straight-sets victory at No. 1, where Cardona topped Pugh, 6-2, 6-3, to make it 2-0.

Al Tori followed with a 6-3, 7-5 win over ElShafei at No. 6 singles, pushing the advantage to 3-0.

Didier then secured the deciding point at No. 2 singles, rallying past Barriere, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, to clinch the 4-0 result and send Columbus State into the championship.

Play continued on the remaining courts, with Lander competing closely in several unfinished matches. Julian Peter held a strong position at No. 3 singles, while Krondell and Jayaprakash were also locked in tight contests before play was halted.

Lander ranked No. 6 in the most recent NCAA Division II Southeast Regional rankings and will now await the NCAA Tournament selection show to see if it secures an at-large berth to continue its postseason journey.
