GREENWOOD----Lander's Austin Murray tossed a one-hit shutout Friday afternoon to help the Bearcats' softball team end Presbyterian College's undefeated season, 10-0, in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at Doug Spears Field. PC won the first game, 4-1. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
Lander improves to 10-14 overall, while PC is 9-1.
Murray struck out five and walked one in five innings of work. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule. PC's Paige Cassidy was the losing pitcher as she walked two and allowed five runs (two earned) on two hits in two innings pitched.
Lander scored four runs in the second inning and six more in the sixth.
For Lander, Melissa Ryals (1-for-3, one RBI), Daisy Stewart (1-for-3, two runs) and Amber Yarborough (1-for-1) all doubled, while Heather Bishop went 1-for-3 with three RBI and Leigh Ann Kelley was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.
Kelly Henderson got PC's lone hit.
In the first game, PC's Mary Gordon (5-0) picked up the win as she struck out five and allowed just one run (none earned) on five hits in the complete seven innings. Lander's Ashlea Burdette (3-6) took the loss as she struck out six, walked two and allowed four runs (two earned) on nine hits in seven complete innings.
Presbyterian took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning on Laura Tate's two-RBI double. Lander cut the margin to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning when Bessinger scored on a fielder's choice.
PC's final two runs came in the seventh inning on Rachel Bailey's two-RBI single.
For Lander, Natalie Smith went 2-for-3.
For PC, Tate went 1-for-4 with one double and two RBI, Ford went 1-for-3 with one double and Bailey was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
