GREENWOOD----Natalie Smith blasted a two-run home run in the first game and Melissa Ryals did the same in the second Sunday to lead the Lander softball team to a non-conference doubleheader sweep against Queens University at Doug Spears Field. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
Lander won the first game, 4-3, and the nightcap, 6-0. Lander improves to 3-1 overall, while Queens starts the season at 0-2.
In the first game, Smith gave Lander a 2-0 lead with her second-inning homer and Lander extended the lead to 3-0 when Ashlea Burdette scored on a Queens' error in the third inning. The Royals scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning to tie Lander, 3-3.
Ryals scored the winning run in the sixth inning on a Queens error.
Austin Murray (1-0) earned the win for Lander, striking out seven, walking three and allowing three earned runs on five hits in the complete seven innings pitched. Queens' Noel Belk took the loss, striking out one and allowing one run on one hit in 1.2 innings pitched.
For Lander, Smith and Burdette, who doubled, both went 2-for-3. For Queens, Belk went 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
In the second game, Lander took a 2-0 lead on Ryals' first-inning home run. Lander scored four more runs in the sixth inning when Daisy Stewart had a two-RBI single, followed by RBI singles from Smith and Corrie Bessinger.
Brittany Wallace (1-1), who struck out three, walked four and allowed three hits in the complete seven innings, was the winning pitcher. Queens' Lauren Berst (0-1) took the loss. Berst struck out three, walked three and allowed two earned runs on two hits in four innings.
For Lander, Ryals went 1-for-2 with two RBI, while six other Bearcats registered hits.
