PENSACOLA, Fla. - In a match up of two of the most successful tennis programs in the NCAA Division II, fourth-ranked West Florida edged 10th ranked Lander, 5-4, Friday at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. The match was the season-opener for both teams, who have combined to win 12 NCAA Division II titles.
Playing under cloudy and cool conditions, West Florida earned two of three doubles wins in the first and third positions. At No. 1, Nicolas Barrientos and Dante Bottini defeated Lander's T.C. Valle/Joakim Karlsson, 8-2; No. 2 Andre Ivarsson/Henrik Willers (LU) def. Eduardo Cavasotti/Luiz Bernardi, 8-5; and No. 3 Diego Zorzi/Luis Arboleda (UWF) def. Guilherme Fonseca/George Wilkinson, 8-5.
In singles, No. 1 Karlsson (LU) def. Dante Bottini (UWF), 6-3, 6-2; No. 2 Diego Zorzi (UWF) def. Nicholas Legros (LU), 6-4, 6-2; No. 3 Guilherme Fonseca (LU) def.
