GREENWOOD – The Pfeiffer Falcons scored nine runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 13-3 non-conference baseball victory over Lander Saturday afternoon at Legion Field.
The teams split the two-game series with Pfeiffer improving to 4-2. The Bearcats fell to 2-3.
Ryan Brown led the Falcons at the plate, going 5-for-5 with five singles, one walk, and three RBI. Bryan Braxton was 4-for-5 while Jodie Groce and Kyle Pugh had three hits apiece. Justin Ridenhour added two hits. The Nos. 2 through 5 hitters (Groce, Braxton, Ridenhour and Pugh) scored a combined 10 runs.
Jonathan Myers paced Lander, going 3-for-5, while T.J. Guinan had two doubles and Chris Munn also had two hits.
There were nine runs scored in the first inning with Pfeiffer taking a 6-3 lead. The Falcons scored six runs on four hits and three walks. Ridenhour hit a two-run double while Braxton and Brown had RBI singles. Danny Morgan and Guinan had RBI doubles for Lander in the bottom of the first while Munn added a run-scoring single.
Pfeiffer knocked Bearcats starting pitcher Derek Wilson out of the game in the top of the second, pushing its lead to 9-3 on Pugh's two-run triple to deep center and Shawn Coke's RBI single. Pugh doubled and scored on Brown's single to make it 10-3 in the fourth.
The Falcons added three runs in the ninth with Zack Pou hitting an RBI single and runs scoring on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch.
Zack Strickland (2-0) was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs on eight hits in five innings of work. Chris Russell tossed the final four innings for Pfeiffer, allowing no runs on four hits to earn the save.
Wilson (0-2) allowed eight runs on eight hits and four walks in one-plus inning. Evan Christian gave up two runs and eight hits while striking out three in five innings of relief. Daniel Hinchberger pitched the final three innings for Lander, allowing three runs on six hits while walking four and striking out five.
