AMERICUS, Ga.----The record-breaking Lander women's basketball team was at it again Saturday afternoon when the Lady Bearcats broke a school- and Peach Belt Conference-record for margin of victory when they defeated Georgia Southwestern University, 113-40, in PBC game.
The 73-point difference broke the previous Lander record of 57 points set in a 96-39 win over Southern Wesleyan University during the 1997-98 season. The Lady Bearcats also set the conference record against PBC teams, breaking the previous record of 62, set by Columbus State in a 101-39 win over Clayton State on Jan. 10, 2001. The overall PBC record for winning margin is 81 set by former member North Florida in a 105-24 victory against Mount St. Vincent on Dec. 31, 1997.
Last week, Lander broke the school- and PBC-record for points in a game when the Lady Bearcats scored 116 points in a victory over Southern Wesleyan.
Against GSW, LaShonda Chiles led the Lady Bearcats with 24 points by making 10-of-13 field goals and 2-of-2 free throws to go along with six steals. Tasheba Butler added 17 points, Shannon McKever and Tiara Good 15 each and Candi McCall 11. Tierra Kirkland posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. TaSheba Butler and Andrea Butler each had seven rebounds.
Brittany Reynolds led the Lady Hurricanes with 10 points, while Jamilah Sharp grabbed 10 rebounds.
Lander, which led at halftime, 63-22, made 45-of-70 field goals for 64.3 percent, 7-of-15 three pointers for 46.7 percent and 16-of-32 free throws for 50 percent.
GSW was 16-of-66 from the field for 24.2 percent, 2-of-19 from the three-point line for 10.5 percent and 6-of-17 from the free throw line for 35.3 percent.
Lander, which shot 74.3 percent in the first half on 26-of-35 attempts, outrebounded GSW, 48-31.
