Lady Bearcats win Peach Belt opener against UNCP

PEMBROKE, N.C.----LaShonda Chiles and Tiara Good scored 21 and 18 points respectively Wednesday night to lead the Lander women's basketball team to a 72-58 Peach Belt Conference victory over UNC Pembroke at the English E. Jones Center.

In the PBC opener for both teams, Lander improves to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the PBC, while UNCP drops to 2-2, 0-1.

Chiles connected on 6-of-14 field goals, including 4-of-8 from the three-point line, and 5-of-7 free throws. Good was 6-of-14 from the field, 4-of-9 from the three-point line and 2-of-2 from the foul line. Stephanie Ponds grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds, while Good had seven. Kianna Smith led the Lady Bearcats in assists with eight.

Natalie Ray led UNCP with 16 points and seven rebounds. DeNeer Davis added 12 points and Ivy Ramsey had 11.

Lander, which led 40-25 at halftime, made 26-of-57 field goals for 45.6 percent, 12-of-26 three-pointers for 46.2 percent and 8-of-11 free throws for 72.7 percent.

The Lady Braves made 23-of-78 floor shots for 29.5 percent and were only 3-of-21 from the three-point line for 14.3 percent. UNCP made 9-of-14 free throws for 64.3 percent.
Lander outrebounded UNCP, 54-35.
