Ponds gets double-double to lead LU past Hurricanes

AMERICUS, Ga.----Stephanie Ponds scored 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds Saturday afternoon to lead the Lander Lady Bearcats to their fifth straight victory, an 89-68 Peach Belt Conference win over Georgia Southwestern.

Lander improves to 11-8 overall and 5-3 in the PBC, while Georgia Southwestern drops to 2-14, 0-8.

Ponds connected on 13-of-18 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws to lead the Lady Bearcats. Bryony Crouch made 5-of-12 three pointers and 1-of-2 free throws for 16 points, and Tiara Good was 4-of-15 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws for 15 points.

GSW was led by Brynne Callaway and Brittany Reynolds, who scored 16 and 14 points respectively. Reynolds also grabbed 14 rebounds, while Callaway had eight. Jamiliah Sharp had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Lander, which led 48-27 at halftime, connected on 33-of-74 field goals for 44.6 percent, 9-of-24 three pointers for 37.5 percent and 14-of-18 free throws for 77.8 percent. GSW was 26-of-65 from the field for 38.5 percent, 4-of-10 three pointers for 40 percent and 14-of-21 free throws for 66.7 percent.
