Lady Bearcats win Peach Belt opener over Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C.----Tiara Good scored 23 points, dished out 13 assists and grabbed nine rebounds, while Stephanie Ponds netted 20 points to lead the Lander women's basketball team to a 74-61 Peach Belt Conference victory Tuesday night over Francis Marion at the Smith University Center.

Lander improves to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in the PBC, while Francis Marion drops to 3-9, 0-1. The five wins equals the number of victories Lander totaled last year.

Good connected on 6-of-19 field goals and 9-of-11 free throws, while Ponds was 8-of-13 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line.

Katherine Kiefer and Kirby Marsh led the Lady Patriots with 15 and 11 points respectively. Marsh also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

Lander, which led 33-31 at halftime, made 23-of-65 field goals for 35.4 percent, 6-of-23 three-point shots for 26.1 percent and 22-of-32 free throws for 68.8 percent.

Francis Marion was 21-of-59 from the field (35.6 percent), 2-of-10 from the three-pont line (20 percent) and 17-of-26 from the free throw line (65.4 percent).

The Lady Patriots outrebounded Lander, 46-41.

Lander will host Georgia College & State University at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 6, in Horne Arena.
