MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.----Freshman Lyric Burnett came off the bench to score three second half goals to help the Georgia College & State University women's soccer team knock off visiting Lander University 5-0 Thursday night in a Peach Belt Conference match at Bobcat Field. It was the first “hat-trick” in the three-year history of the Bobcat soccer program, and it was the fourth straight game that GCSU (3-1-1, 1-0-1 PBC) has not allowed a goal.
After a quiet start GCSU's Hayley Ferrell put the Bobcats on the board in the 33rd minute of the first half on a break-away with an assist from freshman Jamie Nevin. Ferrell scored her second goal of the night, and fourth of the season, shortly before halftime on an assist from sophomore Mary Byrne to put the Bobcats up 2-0 at the intermission.
Lander (2-3, 0-2 PBC) picked up its offense early in the second half, but the Lady Bearcats could not find the back of the net.
Burnett scored her first collegiate goal in the 70th minute with an assist from freshman Daria Owen to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead. She put the game out of reach five minutes later with her second score with assists from freshman Morgan Cobb and junior Emily Norris. Burnett's third goal came in the 78th minute with an assist from freshman Kara Teresi for the final 5-0 margin.
Lander goalkeeper Rachael Hine (2-3) played well, and was busy most of the night, earning 14 saves. GCSU goalkeeper Kristen Moore (3-0-1) was solid once again with five saves while earning her third complete game shutout.
GCSU out-shot Lander 27-12 for the game and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
