GREENWOOD – Augusta State held Lander scoreless for more than eight minutes late in the second half and defeated the Lady Bearcats 58-44 in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action at Horne Arena.
Augusta State improved to 11-15 overall and 6-11 in the Peach Belt. Lander, playing in front of a Homecoming crowd, fell to 4-20 and 0-17.
Shirrell Ford led the Lady Jaguars with 13 points, Eva Vodrazkova had 11 points, and Jamica Wyatt added 10. Tiffany Paschal led Augusta State with 10 rebounds while Alena Batovska had six assists.
Lashaundra Dubose led the Lady Bearcats with 16 points and five assists. Tara Nyikavaranda added a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Dubose scored with nine minutes left to pull Lander within 42-39. The hosts didn't score again until Dubose's lay-up in the game's final minute, ending Augusta State's streak of 14 unanswered points. Vodrazkova capped the 14-0 run with a 3-pointer to push the Lady Jaguar lead to 56-39.
Lander's last lead of the game came with 13 minutes left in the first half when Nyikavaranda scored to make it 12-11. Augusta State pushed its first-half lead to as many as nine, 25-16, on a basket by Paschal with 4:51 left. The Lady Bearcats scored seven unanswered points to close within 25-23 at the 1:31 mark. But Augusta scored the last four points of the half and led 29-23 at the break.
For the game, Lander made 17-of-55 shots from the floor (31 percent), 9-of-15 free throws (60 percent), and 1-of-9 from 3-point range (11 percent). Augusta State made 26-of-64 from the floor (41 percent), 4-of-10 from the line (40 percent), and 2-of-11 from behind the arc (18 percent). The Lady Jaguars had a 54-31 edge on the boards. Augusta had 14 turnovers while Lander had only 11.
