Lady Bearcats basketball falls to Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga.----Columbus State got 16 points and nine rebounds from post player Cherwonna Walker and placed two other players in double digits in taking a 70-39 Peach Belt Conference win over an under-manned Lander squad at the Lumpkin Center Monday evening.

The win puts the Lady Cougars at 15-11 overall on the season, and evens the PBC mark at 8-8. Lander, meanwhile, falls to 4-18 overall and 0-15 in league play.

CSU opened the scoring with a Karina Pulici trey at the 19:03 mark and never looked back. The Lady Cougars scored the first nine points of the game and then out-scored the Lady Bearcats 14-7 over the last 9:37 of the half to take a 36-18 lead into the break. Lander hit just six field goals in the first half to finish at 20 percent overall, but three of those were from long range to keep them within a respectable
margin.

After CSU got the lead to 20 with a Walker jumper a little over a minute into play, Lander reeled off a 10-0 run to get themselves right back into the game. Shatora Irby canned a pair of treys in the run, the last making it 38-28 with 16:49 to play. CSU answered quickly, going on a 12-3 run to go up 50-31 with 11:48 remaining on a Tabasha Taylor jumper. The CSU defense would hold Lander to just eight points
the rest of the way.

In addition to Walker, Abena Bosia came off the bench to collect a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Taylor came off the bench to score 10 points. CSU got points from 10 different players in the game and shot a respectable 43 percent on the night. The Lady Cougars held a 55-34 advantage on the boards and held Lander to 25 percent shooting for the game.

Lander got 14 points and eight rebounds from Tara Nyikavaranda before she fouled out late in the game. Irby added 12 points on 4-7 shooting from long range.
