FLORENCE, S.C. -- The third-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates advanced to the semifinals of the 2006 PBC Volleyball tournament after beating Lander 3-0 in the first round on Friday. The Pirates won the match 30-21, 30-21 and 30-17. With that win, AASU improves to 19-14 on the year while Lander's season comes to a close with a 20-15 record.
Armstrong Atlantic State relied on their big guns with Rindy Vidovich and Leah Schmiedge leading the team with 12 and 10 kills respectively. The duo made their presence felt the most in game two as AASU hit .306 as a team, committing only three errors in 49 attacks. The Pirates hit .217 for the match.
Vidovich and Adriana Miller each had 14 digs to lead the Pirates while Margaret Thornton had 27 assists and a team-high three aces.
Andrea Griffin was the only Bearcat to reach double-figure kills with 10, no other player had more than four. Jennifer Edwards had 25 assists while Melissa Trippany had 22 digs. Lander out-dug Armstrong Atlantic State 74-71 in the match.
Armstrong Atlantic State will face second seed and host Francis Marion in the semifinals at approximately 7 p.m. The winner of that match will play for the PBC Tournament title on Saturday at 2:00.
