GREENWOOD – Nick Cooke scored his third goal of the match 6:33 into the second overtime as No. 21 Lander rebounded from a bizarre end of regulation for an important 3-2 Peach Belt Conference victory over UNC Pembroke Saturday.
Lander improved to 11-3 overall and 4-2 in the Peach Belt while the Braves fell to 7-6-1, 4-2.
Pembroke's Thomas Morrow took advantage of a mistake in the back and scored with just 20 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 2-2. Andrew Brown was credited with the assist.
Cooke had put the Bearcats ahead with two goals in the final 13:47 of regulation, but wouldn't be the hero until overtime when he scored off Ivan Stoykov's assist. The goals gave Cooke a team-high 14 on the season.
The Braves took a 1-0 lead with 10:14 left in the opening half when Max Aust nailed a 25-yarder into upper right corner of the net off an assist from Morrow.
Lander picked up its attack in the second half with several chances to score the equalizer. Stoykov had one of the best chances when he hit the post with 30:40 left in the game.
The Bearcats kept up the inspired play and finally got the equalizer with just 13:47 left in regulation when Cooke scored in the box off a high, arcing lob assist from Tyler Davis.
Cooke scored what looked like would be the game winner with 7:47 remaining when he rifled a 25-yard shot over the goalkeeper's head into the upper right corner of the net off an assist from Colin Kent.
Lander goalkeeper Garrett Daum made a save on Morrow with 2:40 left. Then Morrow shocked the Bearcats with the late goal. But the Bearcats regrouped to win in double overtime.
The Bearcats out-shot Pembroke 14-10. Daum had three saves for Lander while Richard Sallin had eight stops for the Braves.
