PEMBROKE, N.C.---The Lander women's basketball team evened its record at 3-3 Wednesday night when the Lady Bearcats dropped their Peach Belt Conference opener to UNC Pembroke, 77-65.
The Lady Braves kept their record unblemished as they improved to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the PBC. Lander is 0-1 in the PBC.
Shatora Irby led the Lander attack by scoring 33 points on 13-of-27 field goals, including 4-of-6 three-point shots and 4-of-6 free throws. Tara Nyikavaranda grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
UNCP's Tasha Stotler posted a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Lady Braves. Lindsay Bartholf added 13 points, Sharkeysha Midgette 12 and Kristin Vaughan 10.
UNCP, which led 42-33 at halftime, connected on 28-of-67 field goals for 41.8 percent, including 5-of-11 three-point shots. The Lady Braves were 16-of-22 from the free throw line for 72.7 percent.
Lander was 25-of-66 from the floor for 37.9 percent, including 5-of-15 three-point shots. The Lady Bearcats were 10-of-15 from the free throw line for 66.7 percent.
UNCP outrebounded Lander, 45-39.
