MORROW, Ga.----The Lander men's soccer team outscored No. 19 UNC Pembroke, 4-2, in a shootout Friday to advance to the finals of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional tournament hosted by Clayton State University. The game was tied 1-1 after two overtimes.
Lander, 10-4-4 overall, will face top-seeded Clayton State University at 7 p.m. Sunday in the championship game. Clayton State won the 2005 PBC regular-season and tournament championships. The Lander/Clayton State winner will meet the winner of the South Region in the quarterfinal round.
PBC Player of the Year Luke Ibbetson gave Lander a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick at 69:01. The Braves, who finish the season 12-3-5 overall, tied the game at 71:40 on a goal by John Cooper. Cooper was assisted by Trond Myrland.
Jack Thompson, Carlos Lozano, Nick Cooke and Ibbetson scored goals for Lander in the shootout.
Lander goalkeeper Garrett Daum had seven saves, while UNCP's Richard Sallin recorded five.
Lander outshot the Braves, 14-13, and led in corner kicks, 7-5.
