Lander suffers road setback at USCA

AIKEN, S.C. - Lander volleyball fell to the University of South Carolina Aiken in straight sets Saturday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference action inside the Convocation Center.

The Bearcats (5-8, 2-2 PBC) dropped the match 25-14, 25-13, 25-19 as the Pacers improved to 10-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Ryleigh Willard led the Lander attack with eight kills while hitting .208. Karson Browning followed with six kills, while junior Olivia Shaw added four kills on a .250 hitting percentage and two blocks.

Sam Alwardt anchored the Bearcat defense with a team-high 11 digs while adding three service aces. Emma Greenier finished with a team-high 17 assists and four digs.

USCA established control early, hitting .483 with 16 kills in the opening frame to take a 25-14 victory. The Pacers carried the momentum into the second, committing no attack errors and hitting .444 to take a 2-0 advantage in the match with a 25-13 win.

Lander responded with its best offensive performance of the afternoon in the third set. The Bearcats recorded 12 kills and hit .242, while also holding the Pacers to its lowest hitting percentage of the match at .364.

The Bearcats remained within striking distance in the third, but the Pacers were able to create separation down the stretch and close out the match with a 25-19 victory.

Lander finished with eight service aces, led by Alwardt's three, while Browning, Willard, Camryn Scherer, Andrea Crawford and Sarah VanDaele each added one. Freshman Gracelyn America also provided three kills on five attempts for a .600 hitting percentage.

The loss moved Lander to 2-2 in Peach Belt play after the Bearcats opened their conference slate with home victories over Georgia College and Middle Georgia.

Lander returns to Finis Horne Arena on Friday, Oct. 2, to host Flagler at 6 p.m. The Saints currently sit atop the Peach Belt standings with a 3-0 conference record and carry a 12-match winning streak into the week.
