Lander falls to league-leading Flagler at home

GREENWOOD - Lander volleyball dropped a 3-0 decision to Peach Belt Conference leader Flagler on Friday night inside Finis Horne Arena.

The Bearcats (5-9, 2-3 PBC) fell 25-16, 25-18, 25-17 as the Saints (15-2, 4-0 PBC) extended their winning streak to 14 matches and remained unbeaten in conference play.

Karson Browning and Gracelyn America led Lander with eight kills apiece. Browning hit .261 with just two errors on 23 attempts, while Quinn Butler added six kills and the Bearcats' lone service ace.

Amelia May led the Bearcats at the net with five blocks, including one solo block, while Madeline Green finished with 18 assists and seven digs. Andrea Crawford led the back row with 11 digs, and Sam Alwardt added 10.

Lander stayed within striking distance early in the opening set, answering each of Flagler's first two points to tie the frame at 1-1 and 2-2. The Saints began to create separation from there, using a five-point run to turn a 5-4 advantage into a 10-4 lead.

Flagler eventually stretched its advantage to 21-12 before Lander put together its best run of the set. Browning and America each recorded kills during a four-point stretch that pulled the Bearcats within 21-16, but the Saints answered with the final four points to take the opener 25-16.

The Saints again grabbed the early advantage in the second set and used a five-point run to extend an 11-6 lead to 16-6. Lander continued to battle, putting together a three-point run late in the frame behind kills from Browning and America to cut the deficit to 20-14. The Bearcats later fought off two set points before Flagler closed out the 25-18 win.

Lander turned in its strongest offensive performance in the third set, recording 10 kills with just two errors to hit .229. Flagler opened the frame with the first three points, but the Bearcats remained close early and pulled within one at 5-4. The Saints answered and eventually pushed the advantage to 13-8 before Lander made another push.

America recorded a kill during a three-point Lander run that cut Flagler's lead to 13-11, but the Saints responded and pulled away down the stretch to close out the match with a 25-17 third-set victory.

Flagler finished the night hitting .239 with 45 kills, while Lander recorded 26 kills on a .114 hitting percentage. The Saints also held advantages in digs (61-44), service aces (10-1) and blocks (8-6).

Lander returns home Tuesday, Oct. 6, as the Bearcats host Mars Hill in a non-conference matchup at 6 p.m. inside Finis Horne Arena.
