Women’s Tennis Drops Home Match to No. 42 Middle Georgia

GREENWOOD - Lander women's tennis fell to No. 42 Middle Georgia, 5-2, in a Peach Belt Conference matchup Saturday morning at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.

The Knights (9-5, 3-1 PBC) claimed the early advantage by securing the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Aya El Marrasse and Yana Prihach took a 6-2 decision over Sydney Caulder and Ella Sowman on court two before Irina Furtuna and Lucile Gence sealed the point with a 6-2 win against Bailee Martin and Thilda Danielsson at No. 3. The No. 1 doubles match featuring Maria Jose Zarza and Evelyn Altmaier was left unfinished, tied at 6-6.

In singles play, Middle Georgia extended its lead with a straight-sets win at No. 3, as Lucile Gence defeated Caulder 6-1, 6-3 to make it 2-0.

Lander (8-6, 1-3 PBC) responded at No. 2 singles, where Altmaier earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory over El Marrasse to put the Bearcats on the board. The Knights answered with another point at No. 5 singles, as Prihach defeated Sowman 6-3, 6-1, followed by a 6-4, 6-3 win from Tamanna Takoria over Micaela Pallete at No. 6 to move Middle Georgia within one point of clinching the match.

The Bearcats continued to battle, as Zarza picked up a strong 7-5, 6-3 win over Ainhoa Fernandez at No. 1 singles, trimming the deficit to 4-2.

Middle Georgia secured the match at No. 4 singles, where Agustina Olivero defeated Danielsson 7-5, 6-4 to clinch the 5-2 victory.

Lander will return to action Monday, April 13, hosting Erskine College in a rescheduled match at 2 p.m. at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.
