No. 3 Seed North Georgia Ends Lander’s Season in PBC Quarterfinals

Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. - The No. 6 seed Lander women's tennis team saw its season come to a close Friday afternoon, falling 4-0 to No. 3 seed and No. 13 nationally ranked North Georgia in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinals at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.

Lander finishes the year 9-9 overall (2-5 PBC), while the Nighthawks improve to 16-6 (5-2 PBC) and advance to the semifinals.

North Georgia, featuring nationally ranked players Anastasiia Opolska (No. 18) and Olesya Stokusova (No. 34) in singles and the No. 21-ranked doubles duo of Opolska and Stokusova, took early control by securing the doubles point.

The Nighthawks opened the match with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, where Opolska and Stokusova defeated Evelyn Altmaier and Maria Jose Zarza. North Georgia then clinched the point at No. 2 doubles, as Emily Bush and Linn Goerdes posted a 6-0 victory over Ella Sowman and Sydney Caulder.

The No. 3 doubles match, featuring Bailee Martin and Thilda Danielsson, was left unfinished at 3-3.

North Georgia (16-6, 5-2 PBC) secured the doubles point quickly and carried that momentum into singles play, winning three straight matches to clinch the decision.

Sofia Giraldo extended the lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Caulder at No. 3 singles. Moments later, Bush made it 3-0 after a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Sowman at the No. 5 position.

Victoria Niox-Chateau sealed the match for the Nighthawks at No. 6 singles, battling to a 7-6, 6-2 win over Martin to secure the 4-0 decision.

The remaining singles matches were left unfinished, including a tightly contested battle at No. 1 singles where Zarza faced No. 18-ranked Opolska and pushed into a third set after splitting the opening two.
