Bearcats Complete Series Sweep at Georgia Southwestern

AMERICUS, Ga. - The Lander University softball team delivered a commanding opening weekend in Peach Belt Conference play, sweeping Georgia Southwestern with a pair of wins Saturday to complete a three-game series sweep at Lady Canes Field.

The Bearcats (13-7) followed Friday's 9-2 victory with a dominant 15-7 win in Game 1 and a 7-1 victory in Game 2 on Saturday, outscoring the Hurricanes 31-10 and outhitting them 34-16 across the series.

Game One: Lander 15, Georgia Southwestern 7

Lander wasted no time setting the tone in the opener, erupting for four runs in the first inning and four more in the second to build an 8-1 lead quickly.

Samantha Bumgarner led the early charge with a three-hit performance, including an RBI double, while Emily Allen and Savanna Price each crossed the plate three times. Reagan Hill added two hits and two RBIs, and Isabella Santos drove in a pair as the Bearcats' lineup produced 12 hits. Lander also showcased its power at the plate with four doubles in the contest, coming from Bumgarner, Hill, Chloe Manders, and Bella Angeli.

The Bearcats continued to pile on in the third inning with three more runs, highlighted by Allen's two-run single. Lander added two in the fourth and another in the fifth to push the lead to 15-7.

Georgia Southwestern mounted its biggest threat in the fourth inning with six runs, but Lander's early offensive outburst proved too much to overcome.

Payton Schurlknight earned the win after tossing 3.1 innings in the circle, while Anna Phifer closed out the contest in relief.

Game Two: Lander 7, Georgia Southwestern 1

Lander carried its momentum into the nightcap behind another strong outing from Mattye Geddings and timely hitting throughout the lineup.

Reagan Hill jump-started the Bearcats in the first inning with a two-run double to give Lander an early advantage. Georgia Southwestern answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but that would be the Hurricanes' only offense of the game.

The Bearcats broke things open in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on RBI hits from Emorie Anderson, Isabella Santos, and Chloe Manders. Bella Angeli added an RBI single in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Hill finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Anderson and Angeli each collected two hits. Lander totaled 11 hits in the game.

Geddings was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete-game five-hitter while allowing just one run and striking out two.

Across the three-game sweep, Lander's offense consistently pressured the Hurricanes' pitching staff while the Bearcats' pitching staff limited Georgia Southwestern to just 16 hits.

The Bearcats now sit at 13-7 overall and 3-0 in conference after opening Peach Belt play with a statement series victory over the reigning 2025 PBC tournament champions on the road.

Lander will return to action next weekend when the Bearcats travel to face USC Beaufort in a three-game series beginning Friday, March 13. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Bluffton, S.C.
