No. 26 Lander Tops No. 28 Augusta, 5-2, in PBC Opener

GREENWOOD - The No. 26 Lander men's tennis team opened Peach Belt Conference play with a ranked victory Saturday afternoon, defeating No. 28 Augusta, 5-2, at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.

The Bearcats (9-2, 1-0 PBC) dropped the doubles point but responded with a strong showing in singles, winning five of six matches to secure the conference-opening win over the Jaguars (5-7, 0-1 PBC).

Augusta claimed the early 1-0 lead after taking two of three doubles matches. Lander's lone win came at No. 3, where Max Barriere and Anton Krondell cruised to a 6-2 victory. The Jaguars secured the point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Lander quickly flipped momentum in singles play, beginning with a dominant straight-sets victory from No. 28-ranked Harry Pugh at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-3, to even the match at 1-1. Brendan Jayaprakash followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 to give the Bearcats their first lead of the afternoon.

Augusta briefly evened the score at 2-2 with a win at No. 3 singles, but Lander answered with three consecutive victories to close out the match.

Chan Min battled back at No. 6 singles, dropping the first set before rallying for a 5-7, 6-0, 6-4 win to put the Bearcats ahead 3-2. Moments later, Ismail ElShafei delivered the clinching point in dramatic fashion at No. 4 singles, outlasting Alejandro Carbonell in a three-set tiebreak, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (9-7).

Anton Krondell capped the afternoon with a comeback win at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, to secure the 5-2 final.

With the victory, Lander earns a ranked conference win to begin PBC play and improves to 9-2 overall.

Lander will continue Peach Belt Conference play at home Thursday, March 26, hosting Georgia College at 2 p.m. at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.
