Lander Overcomes Slow Start to Take Series Over Flagler With 4-2 Win

GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Lander baseball team came back from a multi-run deficit to take the lead for the second time this weekend and held on for a 4-2 win Sunday afternoon to clinch its third straight Peach Belt Conference series over the Flagler Saints.

It marks the first series win for the Bearcats over Flagler since what became the final PBC series of the 2020 season before the year was canceled due to COVID-19.

As they had in the previous two games, the Saints struck first and built a multi-run lead with runs in both the second and third innings.

However, a bases-loaded walk from Oliver Zohn and an RBI single from Cooper Backman allowed the Bearcats to tie the game in the bottom of the third shortly after the Saints took a 2-0 lead.

Evan Demurias entered in the third inning and scattered five hits across five innings of work. He allowed one run in his first inning but kept the Saints scoreless the rest of his outing.

In the seventh inning, Lander took the lead on another bases-loaded walk, this time from Caden Crews. A Flagler error later in the inning allowed the Bearcats to add an insurance run and extend the lead to 4-2.

Joshua Sanchez entered in the eighth inning and pitched the final two frames scoreless to secure his second save of the season and seal the series for Lander.

The Bearcats continue their homestand Tuesday against the third-ranked North Greenville Crusaders on St. Patrick's Day. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
