Comeback Falls Short as Lander Falls to Flagler, 6-5

GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Lander baseball team had the tying run 90 feet away in the bottom of the ninth but could not bring him home as the Bearcats fell 6-5 to the Flagler Saints on Saturday afternoon at Dolny Stadium in game two of a Peach Belt Conference series.

Ryan Hansen and Brody Winter each delivered RBI singles in the ninth inning to pull the Blue and Gold within one, but with two outs a foul out to the first baseman ended the comeback attempt.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings before the visitors broke through with a two-RBI single in the fourth.

Lander put two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the inning but could not bring either home.

Zach Cowart answered in the fifth with a two-RBI single of his own to tie the game at 2-2.

Flagler plated two runs in the sixth with the help of a walk and a hit by pitch to build another two-run cushion. Another run came across in the eighth, but Lander responded with a run that scored on an errant pickoff attempt to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Flagler added another run in the top of the ninth before Lander rallied in the bottom half. Hansen and Winter delivered RBI singles to put the tying run at third and the winning run on first, but Flagler escaped to secure the win.

The rubber game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at noon at Dolny Stadium.
