Baseball Overcomes 5-1 Deficit; Defeats Flagler 7-5 in Series Opener

GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Lander baseball team plated six unanswered runs across the final four innings to overcome an early four-run deficit and defeat the Flagler Saints 7-5 on Friday evening at Dolny Stadium in the opening game of a Peach Belt Conference series.

The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first two innings, plating a pair of unearned runs in the first before adding another on an RBI single in the second.

A throwing error during a double play attempt allowed Riley Hood to score in the bottom of the second to put Lander on the board and cut the deficit to 3-1.

Flagler extended its lead with runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-1 advantage midway through the game.

The Bearcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth before Connor Crenshaw drove in two with an RBI single to center field to bring Lander within two at 5-3.

After a scoreless sixth inning, Lander loaded the bases once again in the seventh. A fielder's choice off the bat of Zach Cowart brought home the fourth run of the game for the Bearcats, and a wild pitch allowed Lander to tie the game at five heading into the final two innings.

Wild pitches helped Lander again in the bottom of the eighth as back-to-back wild pitches allowed the Bearcats to take the lead and add an insurance run for a 7-5 advantage.

Joshua Sanchez worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth and recorded a strikeout before a fly ball to center field allowed the runner on second to tag up and advance to third. However, the Bearcats successfully appealed the play and the runner was ruled out, ending the game.

The two teams continue the series Saturday at 2 p.m. before the series concludes Sunday at noon.
