Young Harris edges Women’s Tennis 4-3 in tight home match

GREENWOOD - The Lander women's tennis team battled throughout a tightly contested match but ultimately fell just short in a 4-3 loss to No. 43 Young Harris on Wednesday afternoon at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.

The loss marked the first home defeat of the season for the Bearcats, who moved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 at home, while Young Harris improved to 5-3.

Young Harris gained the early advantage by sweeping doubles play to claim the opening point.

The Mountain Lions first secured the lead at No. 3 doubles as Holly Ashford and Viviana Gomez defeated Micaela Pallete and Ella Sowman 6-4. Young Harris then clinched the doubles point at No. 2, where Tuva Asplund and Callie Stanfield edged Thilda Danielsson and Maria Jose Zarza 7-6 (7-3).

At No. 1 doubles, Futaba Saito and Maud Scholten completed the sweep with a 7-6 (7-3) win over Evelyn Altmaier and Bailee Martin.

Lander responded with strong performances across singles play, highlighted by Maria Jose Zarza's continued dominance at the top of the lineup. Playing at No. 1 singles, Zarza controlled her match from start to finish in a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Saito, improving her singles record to 6-0 on the season.

The Bearcats picked up another key point at No. 2 singles as Evelyn Altmaier delivered a gritty straight-set win, defeating Scholten 7-5, 6-4.

Lander also found success at No. 3 singles, where Sydney Caulder rallied after dropping the opening set to defeat Asplund 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Young Harris, however, captured the remaining courts to secure the team victory. The Mountain Lions earned wins at No. 6 singles and No. 5 singles before sealing the match at No. 4 singles, where Viviana Gomez edged Danielsson in a tightly contested three-set battle 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

Despite the narrow defeat, the Bearcats showed resilience throughout the afternoon with three singles victories and multiple tightly contested matches.

Lander will return to action on March 16, traveling to Florence, S.C., for a rescheduled match against Francis Marion. First serve is set for 12:00 p.m.
