Bearcats roll past Young Harris 6-1 at Home

GREENWOOD - The No. 24 Lander men's tennis team delivered a dominant performance Wednesday afternoon, defeating Young Harris 6-1 at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center to improve to 7-2 overall and remain perfect at home with a 3-0 record.

The Bearcats set the tone early by sweeping all three doubles matches to secure the opening point before taking five of the six singles contests.

Lander struck first at No. 1 doubles, where the nationally ranked duo of Harry Pugh and Brendan Jayaprakash controlled the match from the start in a 6-1 win over Guillem Busquets and Greyson Williams to give the Bearcats momentum. Later, Max Barriere and Anton Krondell clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles against Noah Pawirodirjo and Parker Rowan.

Julian Peter and Ismail ElShafei completed the doubles sweep in a tightly contested battle at No. 3, edging Samuel Guzon and Nills Vercruyssen 7-5 to send Lander into singles play with a 1-0 lead.

The Bearcats wasted little time extending their advantage once singles began. Pugh delivered the first singles victory of the day at the top court, cruising past Pawirodirjo 6-1, 6-1 to make it 2-0.

Chan Min followed shortly after with an emphatic 6-0, 6-2 win over Mika Sheth at No. 6 singles, putting Lander firmly in control.

ElShafei pushed the lead to 4-0 and secured the team victory with a strong 6-2, 6-3 performance against Williams at No. 4 singles.

Krondell continued the Bearcats' momentum with a convincing 6-3, 6-0 win over Guzon at No. 2 singles, while Jayaprakash added another point with a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Noah Torrelbauerbach at No. 5.

Young Harris' lone point came in the final match to finish, where Busquets defeated Peter in a three-set battle at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 10-3.

Lander will look to carry its momentum on the road when the Bearcats travel to face Francis Marion on March 19 at 2:30 p.m. in Florence, S.C.
