Walk-Off Homer Downs Lander in Tenth Against Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. - The Lander baseball team held a 6-4 lead entering the ninth inning, but Belmont Abbey plated two runs in its final at bat before a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the tenth gave the Crusaders a 9-6 win in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening at Abbey Yard.

Belmont Abbey (14-7) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI triple and a wild pitch. The Crusaders threatened for more, but the first of two double plays turned by the Lander (14-9) infield helped the Bearcats escape the inning while stranding two runners.

The Lander pitching staff stranded at least one runner in each of the first nine innings.

Brody Winter cut the deficit to one with a leadoff home run three pitches into the top of the second inning, and Cooper Backman tied the game at two with an RBI groundout later in the frame.

The Crusaders answered in the bottom of the third with a solo homer to regain a 3-2 lead. Lander responded by scoring the next four runs to build a 6-3 advantage.

The Bearcats loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth and took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Oliver Zohn and a fielder's choice to make it 4-3. Winter added his second solo homer of the game in the sixth to push the lead to 5-3, and Caleb McKitrick followed with an RBI single to extend the advantage to 6-3.

Belmont Abbey added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Joshua Sanchez entered to record the final out of the inning and limit the damage.

Sanchez kept the Crusaders off the board in both the seventh and eighth innings. However, Belmont Abbey rallied in the ninth as the first three batters reached base. An RBI single cut the deficit to one, and the tying run later scored on a double play with the bases loaded to force extra innings.

Lander put a runner on with two outs in the top of the tenth but could not score. In the bottom half, the Crusaders saw the first two batters reach before a three-run homer ended the game.

The Bearcats return home Friday to open a three-game series against the Flagler Saints at 5 p.m.
