Zarza Earns Peach Belt Women's Tennis Player of the Week Honors

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Junior Maria Jose Zarza of Lander women's tennis has been named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

The honor marks the first Player of the Week award of Zarza's career and the first for Lander this season.

Zarza played a pivotal role in guiding the Bearcats to a 2-0 start to the spring campaign, helping Lander secure a 5-2 road victory at Emmanuel before returning home to complete a 7-0 sweep of Mount Olive.

In singles play, Zarza was dominant from the top of the lineup. Competing at No. 2 singles at Emmanuel, she earned a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory over Anna Goncalves. She then moved to the No. 1 position against Mount Olive, where she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win to help clinch the team sweep.

Zarza was equally effective in doubles action, teaming with Thilda Danielsson at the No. 2 spot. The pair went a perfect 2-0 on the week, posting a 6-4 win on the road at Emmanuel and following with a 6-3 victory against Mount Olive.

Lander women's tennis will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 11, hosting Coker University at 2 p.m. at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center in Greenwood.
