No. 21 Men’s Tennis Shuts Out Mount Olive in Home Opener

GREENWOOD - The No. 21-ranked Lander Bearcats men's tennis team opened its home slate in emphatic fashion Saturday afternoon, blanking Mount Olive 7-0 at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Lander struck first in doubles play, clinching the opening point with wins at the top two courts. At No. 2 doubles, nationally ranked Anton Krondell and Max Barriere raced to a 6-1 victory over Luke Oosthuizen and Joao Sonaglia to get the Bearcats on the board.

Moments later, the No. 2 national duo of Harry Pugh and Brendan Jayaprakash sealed the doubles point at No. 1 with a 6-3 decision against Kristoffer Dalbak and Bram Poel. Mount Olive earned its lone doubles win at No. 3, where Niklas Gruenefeldt and Rasmus Grindheim defeated Benjamin Bates and Julian Peter, 6-2.

Carrying momentum into singles, Lander closed the match with six straight victories, beginning at the top of the lineup. At No. 1 singles, Pugh, ranked No. 13 nationally, delivered a commanding 6-3, 6-1 win over Dalbak.

The Bearcats quickly added to the margin at No. 5, as Ismail ElShafei cruised past Hiroma Nishikata, 6-1, 6-0, followed by a 6-0, 6-3 triumph from Krondell at No. 3 against Grindheim.

Lander continued to control the finish down the lineup. Chan Min battled back for a three-set win at No. 6, topping Oosthuizen 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9). Jayaprakash secured the fifth singles point with a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) victory over Gruenefeldt at No. 4, before Barriere completed the sweep at No. 2, edging Poel in a marathon, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (10-7).

With the home-opening sweep, the Bearcats remain unbeaten and will look to build on the strong start as the early portion of the spring schedule continues.

Lander returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 11, hosting Coker University at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
