Four-Run Sixth Propels No. 27 Lander to Midweek Win Over Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The 27th-ranked Lander Baseball team scored in four of the first six innings, including a decisive four-run sixth, to pull away for a 7-2 midweek win over Newberry on Tuesday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.

Lander (3-0) collected 13 hits, with all but one going for singles. Caden Crews' double in the fourth inning marked the lone extra-base hit for the Blue and Gold. Zach Cowart paced the offense with three hits, while Crews, Ryan Hansen, and Will McClellan each recorded two.

On the mound, Nolan Alexander earned the win in his season debut, allowing one run across five innings of work. Three freshmen combined to close out the final three innings, each making their collegiate debut.

For the third straight game, the Bearcats struck first as McClellan singled home Cowart in the opening inning to give Lander a 1-0 lead. Defensive miscues by Newberry in the second allowed Cooper Backman to score and extend the advantage to 2-0.

After a scoreless third, Hansen lifted a sacrifice fly in the fourth to plate Lander's third run of the contest.

Alexander cruised through the first four innings, picking off two runners and striking out four. The Wolves manufactured a run in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-1, but the right-hander worked out of trouble and kept the Bearcats in front.

Lander broke the game open in the sixth. Backman and Riley Hood reached to start the inning before advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Murphy. Crews drove in Hood with an RBI groundout, and Hansen followed with a single to score Backman. After Hansen stole second, Cowart delivered an RBI single before McClellan capped the rally with another run-scoring base hit to push the lead to 7-1.

Newberry answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but freshmen Jackson Bradley, Dalton Gergan, and Jason Neal only needed ten batters to get through three innings, preserving the 7-2 victory.

Lander returns to Dolny Stadium this weekend to host Mount Olive for the first time since 2018. The series opens Friday at 4 p.m. before concluding with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Homecoming Saturday.
