No. 26 Lander Dominates Claflin in Series Opener

GREENWOOD — The 26th-ranked Lander baseball team scored in all six offensive innings to cruise to a 19-0, seven-inning victory over Claflin on Saturday afternoon at Dolny Stadium in the opening game of a Peach Belt Conference series.

Sixteen Bearcats recorded at least one at-bat, 10 tallied a hit, 12 scored at least one run and eight different players drove in a run in the balanced offensive effort.

Lander drew 10 walks in the contest, led by Brody Winter, who walked four times without an official at-bat.

Ethan Califf earned his second win of the season, tossing four innings of no-hit baseball to start what became a one-hit shutout. AJ Cammarota, Ethan Barbee and Dawson Siffri combined to finish off the victory.

A bases-loaded walk by Will McClellan opened the scoring in the first inning to give Lander a 1-0 lead. A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly extended the advantage to 3-0 after two innings.

The Bearcats broke the game open in the third, plating eight runs. Ryan Hansen delivered an RBI single before Pip Smalley cleared the bases with a three-run triple to stretch the lead to 7-0. McClellan followed with a two-run single to make it 9-0, and a throwing error allowed two additional runs to score later in the inning.

Another bases-loaded walk and an error added two more runs in the fourth.

Carter McCormick drove in the first run of his career with an RBI in the fifth. A bases-loaded walk, a hit by pitch and a two-run single by Isaac Newman — also the first hit and RBIs of his career — capped the scoring as Lander built its 19-run total.

The Bearcats stranded a pair of Panthers in the seventh to secure the run-rule victory.

The two teams conclude the series Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Dolny Stadium.
