No. 26 Lander Sweeps Doubleheader, Series with Claflin

GREENWOOD – The 26th-ranked Lander baseball team continued its explosive weekend at the plate, scoring 28 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Claflin on Sunday at Dolny Stadium to complete the Peach Belt Conference series sweep. The Bearcats scored the first 10 runs of the opener and rolled to an 18-4 win in seven innings before pulling away late for a 10-3 victory in the nightcap.

Eleven different Bearcats recorded a hit across the two games, nine drove in runs and 12 scored at least once. Lowndes Still led the way with six RBIs in the opener.

Game 1: No. 26 Lander 18, Claflin 4 (7 innings)

Lander seized control immediately, scoring 10 runs over the first two innings. Still cleared the bases with a three-run triple in the first to make it 3-0. The Bearcats followed with a seven-run second inning highlighted by a three-run homer from Zach Cowart and a two-run double from Mason Salisbury to build a 10-0 lead.

Claflin got on the board with a double steal in the third, but Lander answered with three more runs in the bottom half to push the lead to 13-1.

The Panthers added a solo homer in the fourth, but Still delivered again in the bottom of the inning with a two-run single, giving him six RBIs in the game and extending the lead to 15-2.

After Claflin scored once in the fifth, Lander began wholesale lineup changes. Isaac Newman recorded his first hit and RBI in a Lander uniform in the sixth, and Caleb McKitrick added a sacrifice fly for the Bearcats' final run.

Neil Stam retired the side in order in the seventh to enforce the run rule and secure the series.

Game 2: No. 26 Lander 10, Claflin 3

Claflin grabbed its first lead of the day in the top of the first, but a balk allowed Lander to tie the game in the bottom half.

The game remained tied until the third when Riley Hood drove in a run on a fielder's choice. An Oliver Zohn single forced an error that allowed another run to score, giving Lander a 3-1 lead.

Claflin trimmed the deficit to one in the fourth, but Lander responded in the fifth. RBI hits from Zohn and Ryan Hansen, along with a sacrifice fly from Cooper Backman, stretched the lead to 6-2.

The Panthers added a solo homer in the sixth, but RBI doubles from Hood and Backman helped put the game out of reach. Kyle Murphy capped the scoring in the eighth with his first hit of the season, an RBI triple to make it 10-3.

Thomas Goldberg earned the win in relief, tossing two innings and allowing one run while striking out two. Peyton Nelson, Dylan Supple and Dalton Gergan combined for three scoreless innings to close out the sweep.

Lander returns to action Tuesday at 3 p.m. against Wingate at Dolny Stadium before resuming conference play Friday at Augusta at 6 p.m.
