No. 22 Lander Rolls Past North Greenville 6-1 in Bounce-Back Victory

TIGERVILLE, S.C. - No. 22 Lander rebounded in emphatic fashion Friday afternoon, defeating North Greenville 6-1 at the Vance Tennis Complex to improve to 6-1 on the season.

The Bearcats responded with poise and authority after suffering a 6-1 setback at Converse on Sunday, sweeping doubles play and claiming five of six singles matches to secure the road victory.

Lander set the tone early by capturing all three doubles courts to earn the crucial opening point. At No. 1 doubles, Max Barriere and Benjamin Bates outlasted Louie Fletcher and David Roseler in a tightly contested 7-6 (7-3) decision.

Anton Krondell and Brendan Jayaprakash delivered a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, while Harry Pugh and Ismail ElShafei rounded out the sweep with a dominant 6-1 performance at No. 3.

Holding a 1-0 advantage, the Bearcats carried that momentum into singles competition.

Pugh, ranked 13th nationally, made a statement at No. 1 singles with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory over Pavle Markus. Jayaprakash followed with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4, and Krondell secured a straight-sets triumph at No. 3, 6-2, 7-5, to push Lander firmly in control.

Julian Peter added another point with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles, and ElShafei closed out a strong afternoon for the Bearcats with a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 6.

North Greenville's lone point came at No. 2 singles, where Fletcher rallied past Barriere in a three-set battle, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).

With the victory, the Bearcats improved to 6-1 overall, while North Greenville dropped to 5-4. Lander will host USC Sumter in a 2 p.m. exhibition Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center before returning to official competition Tuesday, March 3, at No. 7 Catawba.
