Lander Drops Pair of Games to No. 6 Francis Marion

GREENWOOD – Isabella Santos delivered a one-out solo home run in the seventh inning of Game 2 to pull Lander within a run, but the Bearcats could get no closer as they fell to No. 6 Francis Marion 2-1 after dropping the opener 6-0 in a nonconference doubleheader.

Despite matching the Patriots in total hits across the two games, Lander stranded 16 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded twice in Game 1.

Game 1: No. 6 Francis Marion 6, Lander 0

The first three batters reached base for Francis Marion (FMU) in the top of the first inning and were brought home on a grand slam by the Patriots' cleanup hitter, giving the visitors a 4-0 lead.

After the early damage, Paige Sherman settled in and kept FMU off the scoreboard from the second through the sixth inning to keep Lander within striking distance.

The Bearcats loaded the bases in both the second and fourth innings but were unable to capitalize.

Francis Marion added two insurance runs in the seventh to secure the 6-0 final.

Game 2: No. 6 Francis Marion 2, Lander 1

Payton Schurlknight tossed three hitless innings to open the second game before a leadoff solo home run in the fourth inning gave the Patriots a 1-0 advantage. FMU extended its lead to 2-0 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.

Lander scattered four hits before breaking through in the seventh, when Santos launched her third home run of the season over the right-center field fence to cut the deficit to one. However, the Bearcats were retired in order following the blast to end the game.

Lander will travel to Florida for three games over spring break, beginning with a doubleheader against Florida Southern on Tuesday, March 3, at 2 p.m. The Bearcats will then face Embry-Riddle on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Lander opens Peach Belt Conference play next weekend against defending PBC tournament champion Georgia Southwestern, starting Friday at 6 p.m.
