No. 19 Lander Forces Rubber Matchup with No. 9 North Georgia with 4-1 Win

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The 19th-ranked Lander baseball team broke through in the fifth inning and added key insurance runs late to earn a 4-1 victory over ninth-ranked North Georgia on Saturday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium, forcing a rubber match in the Peach Belt Conference series.

Both teams were held scoreless through four innings as Ethan Califf delivered a gritty start for the Bearcats. Despite issuing six walks, Califf struck out seven and allowed just one run on three hits across 5.1 innings of work.

Lander broke the deadlock in the top of the fifth when Zach Cowart led off the inning with his third home run of the season, a shot to right-center field that gave the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. Later in the frame, Lander capitalized on a North Georgia error, and Cooper Backman lifted a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage to 2-0.

The Nighthawks answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but Califf limited the damage and stranded two runners with a strikeout to preserve the lead.

The Bearcats added breathing room in the sixth. Cowart delivered an RBI single, and Pip Smalley followed with a run-scoring knock of his own to push the lead to 4-1.

North Georgia threatened in the bottom of the sixth, putting two runners aboard and ending Califf's afternoon. Joshua Sanchez entered and quickly recorded a flyout and strikeout to escape the jam. The right-hander was dominant down the stretch, allowing just one baserunner over the final three innings while striking out two to earn his first save of the season.

The two teams will meet Sunday at 1 p.m. at Bob Stein Stadium with the series on the line.
