No. 19 Lander Falls in 10 in Series Finale vs. No. 9 North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — In a series that entered Sunday tied in both runs (6-6) and games (1-1), it was only fitting that extra innings were needed to decide it. The 19th-ranked Lander baseball team came up just short as ninth-ranked North Georgia delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to claim a 4-3 victory in the Peach Belt Conference series finale Sunday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium.

With cold and windy conditions keeping the bats quiet early, both starters — Jake Monroe for Lander and Andrew Duval for North Georgia — cruised through the first three innings without allowing a run.

The Nighthawks struck first in the fourth. After putting two runners on with one out, North Georgia plated the game's first run on an RBI single and threatened for more with two in scoring position. Monroe limited the damage by inducing a groundout to escape the inning trailing 1-0.

Lander answered immediately in the fifth. Three straight hits to open the inning, capped by a Caden Crews RBI single, tied the game at 1-1. A North Georgia error then loaded the bases with no outs, and a walk to Will McClellan pushed the Bearcats in front 2-1.

However, Lander was unable to fully capitalize. A double play brought home a third run but erased two baserunners, and a failed delayed steal of home — which resulted in a rundown between first and second — ended the inning.

North Georgia responded in the bottom half of the fifth, tying the game at 3-3.

Both bullpens settled in from there. The Nighthawks mounted a major threat in the eighth, loading the bases with one out against Evan Demurias. The senior right-hander responded with a strikeout and a soft ground ball to third that resulted in a fielder's choice, preserving the tie.

Lander had its best opportunity in the ninth when Brody Winter and Mason Salisbury delivered back-to-back singles to open the inning. A strikeout and consecutive fielder's choices, however, ended the threat. Demurias stranded two runners in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extras.

After Lander went quietly in the 10th, North Georgia led off the bottom half with a single. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner into scoring position, and a one-out RBI single to center brought home the winning run and secured the series for the Nighthawks.

Lander returns to action Tuesday in a makeup game against Erskine at Grier Field in Due West. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Bearcats won the first two games of that series, 12-8 and 10-4, in a Jan. 30 doubleheader.
